Pregnancy Chiropractic Care
We see pregnant women from all over the Northern Beaches at Curl Curl Chiropractic. Some women come in with specific aches and pains, whereas others recognise that having their spine in the best shape possible is going to help during the arduous labour they’re about to go through.
Pregnancy causes all sorts of extra pressures on the body, both mechanically and hormonally. There is a hormone in the body that gets released called relaxin. The word relaxin kind of gives a bit of a hint as to what it does, it relaxes. This is very important during labour, as the pelvis has to move to allow for the baby to come out. Unfortunately, relaxin is not released only during labour, but throughout the whole pregnancy. This means looser ligaments, which also means that it’s much easier for spinal joints to go out of position during pregnancy. This means more joint sprains and strains, and also more chances for muscle strains.
Mechanically, there is a shift in a pregnant woman’s centre of gravity, along with the extra weight that a pregnant woman has to carry. This also leads to extra sprains and strains on her back. Luckily, it’s all worth it in the end!!
Our Chiropractors are all specifically trained to treat pregnant women and are certified in Webster’s technique. Webster’s technique is a specially designed technique aimed to help pregnant women.
After birth/Post Partum care
So you've had your baby! Congratulations!! Maybe everything went well, or maybe it was a bit trickier than you first thought? You may be asking yourself, "why am I getting back pain after giving birth?" There are a number of reasons why you may be experiencing back pain after pregnancy. One very common reason we see women in pain after giving birth has been touched on earlier in our pregnancy chiropractic section, and that is the presence of relaxin still in the body. Relaxin is a hormone released in the body to help relax the ligaments to allow for the baby to pass through the birth canal. But, it stays in the body for quite a while after giving birth. How long, as you would expect, varies from person to person, but it is not unusual for relaxin to stay in the body 6-12 months after giving birth. This means that associated symptoms, such as reduced stability in your pelvis and joints also linger around for the same time.
Other common reasons that we see women in pain after giving birth (postpartum pain):
- posture while feeding your baby
- carrying your baby (along with everything else that goes along with your baby!)
- change in muscles supporting the spine
- increased stress associated with raising your baby ie crying babies, lack of sleep, uncertainty about your parenting etc etc etc
After birth, or postpartum women commonly experience
-low back pain
-pain in the hips and pelvis
-sciatic pain, or sciatica
-coccyx pain
-upper back pain
-neck pain
-headaches
The good news for you, is that there are a number of different treatment options for you. At Curl Curl Chiropractic, we get fantastic results for women suffering from these problems. We find that specific spinal adjustments, along with soft tissue work, specific spinal exercises along with some postural advice will usually fix your problems.
